The sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure in which most of the stomach is removed except a small sleeve-shaped pouch. It restricts the amount of food that can be eaten like after surgery it would hold only 1 ½ to 5 ounces, and is about the size of a banana. Patients are unable to eat as much food, fewer calories are absorbed into the body, and the hormonal signals between the stomach and the brain are changed. Typically, patients will experience weight loss and improvement in metabolic syndrome and overall health and well-being.
Leads to significant weight loss.
Limits the amount of food that can be eaten
Causes significant changes to digestive organs and hormones that result in reduced hunger and increased metabolism
Leads to significant improvement of obesity-related health conditions
Doesn’t use a foreign object like the gastric band.
Doesn’t reroute the digestive tract
In India the majority of sleeve gastrectomies performed today are completed laparoscopically. This involves making five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performing the procedure using a video laparoscope and long instruments that are inserted through these small incisions. During the surgery, about 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric tube or “sleeve”. This short operative time is an important advantage for patients with severe heart or lung disease.
